In School Counseling Program

School staff primarily refer high-risk youth groups to AFY for School-Centered Groups. However in some cases, referrals are also made by other students. There are two types of groups:

1. Natural friendship groups, which include groups of friends or entire youth gangs

2. Individually referred students who form a therapeutic group

​

AFY staff coordinate with school faculty to implement School-Centered Groups. Group counseling sessions use school facilities to meet with students during one class period each week to address violence and academic achievement. The following services have emerged as a result of AFY’s School-Centered Groups:

 

• Youth Leadership and Mentorship

• Before- and After-School Services

• Truancy Reduction Services

• Specialized Girl’s Group and Services
