A Brief History

Adult Friends for Youth (AFY) was established at the University of Hawaii School of Social Work in 1985. It began as a volunteer mentoring program for at risk children and adolescents funded by a two-year federal demonstration grant, and was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on December 8, 1986. Incorporation paved the way for management independent of the University on December 1, 1987 when the federal grant ended.

As time went by a professional staff was assembled to provide therapeutic and educational services that were beyond the scope of volunteers. In keeping with AFYs evolution, the volunteer mentoring program was phased out in 1996.

An outcome of AFYs professional growth and development was the emergence of new knowledge and a new approach to working with very high risk youth called the Redirectional Therapy.

AFY promotes educational achievement and offers a prescription of hope for significantly reducing poverty and destructive behaviors among high risk youth.

Adult Friends for Youth is an Aloha United Way Community Support Agency, Designation #70010.
